Overall it’s been a fairly mild winter.  I am just finally getting to blog these pretty pix of Cornwall, CT .   We were surprised to wake to a snowstorm after a week of 50 degree weather in the city.  The kids had only one snow day off from school this year – and it felt as if they had a snowball fight in the morning, and then a melted yard by afternoon.  In a sense I am happy to see hyacinth and tulip buds already emerging in our front yard… but this day in the snow was definitely a peaceful and fun one:  IMG_4695IMG_4709IMG_4710IMG_4711IMG_4713

I’m trying to take a new approach to winter: if you can’t beat it, join it!  It was hella cold on Thanksgiving – like 8 degrees where we were in Connecticut.  But I figured out if I had all the right warm clothing on, a refreshing walk in the snow can really clear your head. The kids loved following a frozen stream and then whittling their found branches into walking sticks.

Someone’s birthday is rapidly approaching, and all he wanted this year was another trip to the Lime Rock Race track.  Look at the smile on this boy’s face! (in his imagination he’s owning all these cars.. )

Our end-of-summer ritual … going to the Goshen Fair.  It’s not often that our family separates – but this time Zoe was hell-bent on seeing all the cute animals and Ezra wanted to hit Lime Rock for their annual Classic Car Show.  So my girl and I got a day on our own:

She and her new friend Luca had walkie talkies, and spoke through these even when only a foot apart from each other!

Happy New Year!

We got back from sunny Florida and headed to Connecticut for a great NYE party.  By the next morning there was enough blanket of snow to go out for a New Year’s Day fat burning snow hike.  We had our new friend Jem the rescue dog in tow for a walk (owned by our friend Tom) and explored the snowy fields and frozen lake, and a tree full of frozen-in-time icicles!  Back to the grind..

We usually drive by the center of Kent Connecticut – but this time we got out of the car and checked out all the great sculpture that’s around.  Some photos that I found in my phone:

We went back to gorgeous Connecticut and all the nature that it has to provide.  We hiked around the Housatonic Falls a bit – which looked so much like the moon with fresh ice water running over it.  The kids were real patient about posing for their dad’s photos – in some cases they even got into the Swiss cheese holes in the rocks for the shot!
Zoe loved posing as a wood sprite on tree stumps (her dad’s shot is better but my less professional version from my iPhone is below).  We also explored a dairy farm  where fresh chocolates are made from the cow’s milk!  Of course this got us in the mood for some ice cream that came from another dairy farm down the road.  How did Zoe fit that whole ice cream into her belly you may ask?  Well, mom helped at the end.

We skipped off to the country for some much needed lake, tennis and blueberry picking .  Somewhere along the way we found Michael Wainwright’s studio – where they had a day of free pizza, ice cream and ceramic painting/enameling that the kids loved!  And of course we couldn’t miss a day at the Lime Rock  again to check out some more speedy cars.

I have no idea why it took us so long to check out this race car track in Cornwall, Ct area – one that Paul Newman use to frequent, and that we can hear (wheels squealing on the track) from the ‘cation house‘ in the spring and summer time.   It was a hot Sunday over Memorial Day weekend but the heat didn’t stop us (Ezra especially) from enjoying all the classic and current cars on display:

One weekend evening there was a ‘last hurrah’ of sorts at the lake – where everyone brought a dish for the potluck and bluegrass music entertained the crowd. When everyone pitches in to pick the flowers and create the candle path, it really feels intimate and cozy. The kids took one last dive off the dock with a bit of hesitation – all of us wishing the day at the lake could last forever.
