Well it’s been a mild winter so far, and today the temps are in the 60s – which I’m kind of digging.  But tomorrow we are meant to have a snow day off… will it happen?  Will we have another day like the one shown below.. which was back in the beginning of January and blew away within a day?  Or will it linger?  And I wonder how our new friend Louie will cope with snow –

Happy New Year!

We got back from sunny Florida and headed to Connecticut for a great NYE party.  By the next morning there was enough blanket of snow to go out for a New Year’s Day fat burning snow hike.  We had our new friend Jem the rescue dog in tow for a walk (owned by our friend Tom) and explored the snowy fields and frozen lake, and a tree full of frozen-in-time icicles!  Back to the grind..

Well here’s what’s been going on here: we had a dusting of snow that lasted for all of a couple of hours and then melted away as rain within the same day.  It was pretty enough to photograph but didn’t linger long enough to turn into snowmen.  My Jewish kids were once again tapped for their acting skills – as Zoe played the Grinch in the school play just as her brother did 3 years ago.  I’m glad the school hung on to that backdrop that I made all those years ago!  This year was spruced up with a sled made from the janitor’s cart – it was Zoe’s favorite scene, riding in that thing.  We got to squeeze in a kid-version mash up of Swan Lake and Nutcracker called ‘Ballerina Swan‘.  Zoe loves posing with the dancers!

It was a crazy busy week last week of movie premiers and parent/teacher conferences. We ran off to a friend’s house in the country to enjoy the foliage but it was covered with snow by Sunday! Here are some snaps from IG of some of the highlights :

We hung out in Cornwall CT again with friends, and my boys were inspired to jump into the lake on New Year’s Day. I don’t quite understand this tradition, but they like it (and my husband has done the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island before so .. this one is more manageable for the kids it seems).

I’m not really a resolution person, but some things came to mind that I’d like to try to practice this year (no pressure, I’ll just try!)

– remember what great “partners in crime” me and my husband are to each other
– stop cleaning the house so much!
– have more dinner parties cuz hey, they’re fun
– don’t bark at the kids; no sense in making their day stink too..
– have patience
– stop eating and drinking things that just taste ‘eh’. If it’s scrumptious, then pig out and enjoy.

Here are some Jan 1 moments via our instagram feed:

In the last few days of our winter break we did some exploring right outside of our city… and came across Hudson Beach Glass. The kids loved watching the glass blower (I LOVE the rack of glass pumpkins!), and we later stopped at Homespun Foods for an amazing yummy lunch.

Now we are a little blue to be back to the grind and to our regular routines – but colder weather is moving in so that it really feels like winter! Clearly the snow in the photos below show that NYC has some winter catching up to do ..

Even though our blizzard petered-out, the kids stayed outside all day and got good and tired from snow play. Ambitious dads made snow forts, Ezra repeatedly heated up maple syrup and poured it into snow, and neighbors on our alley were shoveling for hours.
