Archive for February, 2017

Ok I’m realizing my blog is becoming about the constantly changing temperatures here but COME ON! We’ve gone from snow storm to sudden 70 degree spring day so it’s definitely worth mentioning, right?   When I look at my previous post and see all that snow, and then realize that I’m about to post some “trips to the beach images”, I’m reminded of how crazy this Feb weather really has been.

But more importantly: we’ve found a new beach.  We drove to the Fire Island Lighthouse after a friend recommended this hike to the shore via the more inland parking lot area.  And what a nice surprise this all was!  We spotted deer who lingered just 10 feet from the path, and learned that our new rescue dog (who hails from Nebraska) is as in love with the sea as we are!  The only downside: we were NOT the only ones with this brilliant idea – the beach was packed with other beach combers in late Feb!  Go figure..

It did snow, and we had a snow day off from school (kids were thrilled).  I unknowingly took our new dog Louie out in the snow without a sweater… yes, I’m use to shedding dogs with fur .. so had NO idea how cold this poor boy would be.  Now I know.  He survived me like a trooper.

Other than socializing Louie as best we can, and getting him use to living with us – we keep our fingers on the pulse of various local protests, sometimes stopping to photograph them.  The city is alive and pulsing as always, but often it’s too cold to stay out there for long!

And the irony: this weekend will be unseasonably warm so we will plan on doing some grilling!  Enjoy your weekend.

His cursive writing skills are coming along nicely! They no longer teach this at school, sadly. Ezra learned it himself.

Well it’s been a mild winter so far, and today the temps are in the 60s – which I’m kind of digging.  But tomorrow we are meant to have a snow day off… will it happen?  Will we have another day like the one shown below.. which was back in the beginning of January and blew away within a day?  Or will it linger?  And I wonder how our new friend Louie will cope with snow –

During these colder months we’ve had a lot of great ‘women artists’ shows to see.  First we checked out the Pipilotti Rist show at the New Museum.  Can you tell where Zoe got the idea to have lights on her tent during her birthday?  The kids love lounging on soft furniture while watching projections on the ceiling – and the lights cascading from the ceiling!  Another show that we saw was the Marilyn Minter show at Brooklyn Museum of Art.  This show was a bit more risqué for kids but many pieces were lush enough to distract the kids from the more adult material.  Again, large projected images on the floor or ceiling just keep my kids interested for hours!

Welcome our new sweet, rescued friend Louie. He is about 4 years old and mostly schnauzer (maybe a schnoodle as he may be mixed with poodle?) Not only is he NOT a chewer and house trained, but also sweet and a super snuggle bug. He will sit in your lap and keep you warm all day. And he’s hypoallergenic! No shedding! This mamma loves this!

It was high time we caved to Ezra’s constant begging for a dog and all the responsibility that comes with it (which he is doing so very well at upholding).  Now we just have to figure out what to do with Zoe’s overwhelming desire to have a hamster or a cat ; (
