Once a year the sun sets perfectly between buildings on 23rd-34th Street (and others on the West side) and here in NYC we call it ‘Manhattanhenge‘. Sadly I missed it this year (which is odd seeing as I work near to here) but I’ve seen it in past years, and it is beautiful. Photos below via instagram :

For the first time ever we all slept in a tent together. On the hard ground. Under the stars. We woke up to the sound of water babbling just by our campsite – the kids can play in nature forever. We banned ipads and electronics, and the older kids discovered they liked to find low hanging branches where they’d create woodland shelters. Our campground at Rip Van Winkle in Saugerties, NY has a heated pool and hay rides at 4 pm on Saturdays to keep kids further entertained. It was a great way to start summer!

Summer Solstice

We spent Wednesday night staying up past the kids’ bedtimes. Socrates Sculpture Park had their annual Summer Solstice Celebration, complete with a silent disco and LOTS of stations where kids could create things from recycled materials. If you look just beneath the 3rd and 4th bubble (from the left) you will see a ‘blue flower sculpture’ just in front of the tree. That’s Ezra’s masterpiece – made of blue plastic bags and book ends. We stayed up waiting for the sun to go down … it wasn’t until 9 p.m. that it started to get a wee bit dark. The kids were exhausted and slept like ya do when it’s summer, and you’ve been outdoors all day long. Bring it on!
