Ezra has been taking drum lessons around here lately, and I’ve realized that I love the colors under the train tracks and the Sesame Street style stoops on houses!  It’s really taking me back to scenes of Sesame Street from the 70s, but with all the new high-rises and graffiti in the mix – it’s something new.   What does it remind you of?

During Veteran’s Day we stumbled on the new Hunter’s Point coastal walk … one of many new and improved ‘coastlines’ of Queens.  There are others around Manhattan and Brooklyn – see here: (https://ny.curbed.com/2018/8/9/17667488/new-york-domino-park-hunters-point-south-photo-essay.)  When I first came to NYC in 1989 it seemed liked so much of this land was used for tossing trash, or vacant and ignored.  It’s so great to see it now is used as recreation area and more saliently, landscaped in a way that’s good for promoting ‘run off’ to keep city toxins out of the soil.  I love how the grasses here were planting to facilitate this – while at the same time avoiding land erosion.  Best of all it seems to last year round (colors looking good in the fall, and perhaps even staying around for the winter).

.. then came the colder winds, and blew the leaves all away.

Oh well, it was so nice while it lasted.  One blustery but sunny day in Kissena Park in Queens, we got to walk around and enjoy all the color before it all blew down.  Autumn is so brief this year, and yet it came late (first week of November).  Our cheeks were rosy and kids were tired after being blown around on their scooters, and then daylight savings time ended and we all got a good night’s sleep.

How is your week going?

A few weekends ago we went to Alley Pond Park Adventure Course to explore the new ropes course and zip lines. While Zoe wasn’t old enough to go on, Ezra and his dad had a try at climbing into the tree canopies, walking across ladder bridges and then ‘belay-ing‘ down with a harness and some trainers holding on from the ground! I have to tell you – I was so proud of Ezra and how easily he faced this challenge. Fearless really: which is great considering what an intense school year it’s been for him (already at 4th grade!) I’m happy to see him face more and more challenges each day, almost effortlessly.

Ok so this isn’t an ad for Bernie.  He just happened to be visiting our neighborhood and it became a simple outing to compliment our kids’ recent interest in voting and presidents (thanks to Hamilton the musical!)

We went to LaGuardia College this weekend to see Bernie speak to the Queen’s masses, and E and Z’s dad was selected to stand up on stage – RIGHT behind Bernie – and get the greatest shots!

Even though we are not moving too far, I will still miss all this activity right outside our apartment door. Nothing like a lazy Sunday morning with a Bolivian Parade marching by in amazing costumes and performing dances right at your door!

There’s nothing worse than dying to see your kids all week, and then your flight to pick them up gets CANCELLED! The only thing good that came out of that evening was a quick trip to Saw Shack for dinner. This new Chinese restaurant in our ‘hood makes yummy, fresh Chinese food with vegan and vegetarian options too. We had the shrimp with mango and it was amazing .. no sauces smothering the mango. The tofu dish with broccoli was incredible as well. It’s pathetic that all I have to show here is a half eaten dish, but trust me it went down quickly and held us over for the next 6-8 hours of waiting in an airport, begging for a flight to get to our kids. The orange infused water is definitely something I want to try at home.

not fine dining here but the food is super fresh and tasty!
