During Veteran’s Day we stumbled on the new Hunter’s Point coastal walk … one of many new and improved ‘coastlines’ of Queens.  There are others around Manhattan and Brooklyn – see here: (https://ny.curbed.com/2018/8/9/17667488/new-york-domino-park-hunters-point-south-photo-essay.)  When I first came to NYC in 1989 it seemed liked so much of this land was used for tossing trash, or vacant and ignored.  It’s so great to see it now is used as recreation area and more saliently, landscaped in a way that’s good for promoting ‘run off’ to keep city toxins out of the soil.  I love how the grasses here were planting to facilitate this – while at the same time avoiding land erosion.  Best of all it seems to last year round (colors looking good in the fall, and perhaps even staying around for the winter).

In the last few days of our winter break we did some exploring right outside of our city… and came across Hudson Beach Glass. The kids loved watching the glass blower (I LOVE the rack of glass pumpkins!), and we later stopped at Homespun Foods for an amazing yummy lunch.

Now we are a little blue to be back to the grind and to our regular routines – but colder weather is moving in so that it really feels like winter! Clearly the snow in the photos below show that NYC has some winter catching up to do ..

and we are winding down December with the last of gingerbread-house making at school, visits to see family in Boston (note the New England tree with lobster, fisherman, and lighthouse ornaments) and a trip to Brooklyn where Industry City had a great ‘Mexican Christmas’ party and display of blinky snowmen. I for one am looking forward to a quieter winter break before New Year’s Eve…

Our synagogue is in the middle of what is now a large, thriving Chinatown. We love going to the New World Mall which has at least 3 floors of all the possible Asian foods you could possibly want. Just near our table we found Korean-Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese dishes to choose from. Check out the choices here. I hope to make this a regular habit ..

Look at this little muffin – I was so proud of her. She had all her lines and moves memorized (and was so nervous, she chewed on her hair until it was soaked in her own saliva) — but what an amazing performance! Her teachers had a party afterwards and created a giant (cardboard) gingerbread house with photo cut outs of all the kids on it – so cute! See Zoe tossing a snowball to her friend Amanda? The neighbors in our ‘alley’ had a round up over the weekend… to discuss living-together things (like upcoming snow removal) and just meeting each other in general. We are one of 3 families that moved in between September and October so – lots of new kids abound! Mostly girls, but they have a giant pink battery operated car so Ezra is definitely still intrigued. And the older girls decided to break out a magic show for the crowd. I think E and Z are gonna like it here!

Now that we are back to the snowy grind of NYC, we find ourselves trying to find things to do indoors again. The New York Hall of Science has an Eco House exhibit out in their parking lot that supplied lots of info on how to save energy in your home. And a Summer Camp Fair in the lower level was already getting us excited for warmer weather. Of course Zoe cannot resist a face painting (or wearing her princess dress out for a museum day) and Ezra LOVES building with dowels. The boy will make you a bridge if you ask him to…
