I think we are. But we were happy to tag along with our friends this past Sunday – to see the New York Botanical Garden’s Haunted Garden. Lots of crazy ideas here for how to carve (or stack) your pumpkins into nifty sculptures. We have 2 last pumpkins to carve/paint or stick with these cool decorators that Bubby found… and then it’s over. Pumpkins – prepare to become soup!

Ezra indulged me on his birthday and let us return to this pretty place again – with its gorgeous view of the Hudson and glass house full of succulents. Grandma and grandpa were in town and met us there, so we got to show them our favorite garden in/near the city (it’s in the Bronx). Making butterfly hats in the newly renovated Wave Hill House was just the icing on the cake.

What a strange time of year it’s been. We went to the New Jersey Botanical Garden and had a nice little picnic on the grass, and shortly thereafter it started to snow like crazy! The nice folks at the Skylands Manor let us enter (where normally you need an appointment to go in) — they knew that Zoe thought it was a ‘princess castle’ and let us check it out. Oddly enough today it’s 80 degrees in New York… what a strange April!

Really could it get any colder? We are starting to go a little stir crazy indoors but honestly, it hurts to expose even a nose in this weather.

Some things to warm you:

— The perfect snowman. And some more here.

— If near a fireplace, start up the s’mores.

— Now that Zoe has had a tea party, I’m kinda craving one for big girls.

— And speaking of tea, check out these adorable tea cups.

— Stuck inside? My kids love to make a fort.

— This weekend is Tu Bishvat and we’ll be reading this book. I love the illustrations by Marc Simont.

— Speaking of trees, spare one and upcycle an old wood crib. What a great idea!

— How to do ‘little trees’ (as my kids call them) right… and quick!

— New thing I learned: Frost Flowers?

— Can you be up for this challenge of photographing your kids at least once a week? This underwater shot is the best.

— The prettiest dresses. I want them all!

— Getting excited about Valentine’s Day? I love this Valentine idea for kids.

This weekend we felt we kind of returned to ‘normal’ for the first time in awhile. Ezra has been back to school, the trains were running to work and back, we were able to put a little gas in our car, and the weather is oddly sunny and balmy (after a hurricane, a snowstorm – what next?) I feel guilty even admitting it: seeing as people in Coney Island, Red Hook, Breezy Point, Far Rockaways, New Jersey and Long Island are still trying to piece their lives back together. There are still relief efforts happening all over the city (many inspired by kids, which is so sweet), and people still without power.

But at least the kids got to get outside and spend some time exploring leaves and trees, as if it were the middle of October again.

And *poof* another month is flying by … Thanksgiving is coming up already?
