Ezra and Zoe both took part in theater camp this summer (Zoe’s post soon to come..!)

Ezra had to audition for this Wingspan program.  He went into a casting call in the spring; drumming and singing ‘You Know I’m No Good’ by Amy Winehouse and wowing the crowd.  When he was accepted, we were so proud but also excited to see what new Manhattan “acting kids” Ezra would get to know.

They were a fun and kind crew, and – as it turns out – so thoroughly jazzed about theater that they do this kind of thing all year ’round.  For Ezra and I it was fun to catch the E train to Times Square every morning to get him to the theater district (although my feet wore out quickly with the arduous commute, it’s pretty rare that a kid goes to camp in Times Square every day!) For Ezra, it was exposure to more creative middle school-aged kids, who don’t mock each other for wanting to sing and dance.

‘Dancing’ – it turns out – is the hardest thing Ezra had to do.  He can sing, he can drum, he can act… but all that dancing nearly broke him.  In a sense he was happy to rise to the challenge but it was challenging for him to stick with it in the beginning of the summer.

The end result was this delicious little rendition of ‘James and the Giant Peach’ – a favorite Roald Dahl book brought to life on the stage with some fun singing and dancing.  I love the very ‘Wes Anderson’ costumes and props, and in the end Ezra got a glimpse of theater life on the great White Way. I’m proud of him for seeing it through – and next year he claims he wants “race car or drumming camp”.

Ah to be by the sea… only this time we were “virtually” IN THE OCEAN via the magic of VDR and other cool affects at the National Geographic Ocean show.  I have to admit, I thought this show at the NY Hall of Science was slicker as we felt like it was wayyyyy more interactive than this Nat Goe show.  But the VR movie at the end is amazing .. when we got swallowed by a whale! IMG_9820

Once again E and Z’s dad scored us some early viewing tickets to Cinderella. The kids were encouraged to dress up like prince and princess and we had some free popcorn and soda. The movie by the way is gorgeous… the costumes are amazing. And Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother, Cate Blanchett as the step mother? Incredible casting! If you asked the kids for their reviews it would go pretty much like this: Ezra loved the talking mice, and Zoe loved the big blue swirly dress. There’s a sweet little short film about Elsa and Anna to start the show as well, which the kids also loved.

We got tickets to see the Annie movie – and saw it in Times Square (which really made us feel as if we were going to see the musical). We loved the movie, and the totally new take on a “contemporary Annie” living as a foster child in the Bronx. The kids enjoyed identifying with Annie’s romps through the city and its boroughs, especially in the opening of the movie where she rides a Citi Bike home after school! And who wouldn’t enjoy a cozy movie theater and popcorn when it’s so cold outside?

What are you up to this weekend? Does it include lots of television, friends and cheesy nachos? While we aren’t the hugest football fans, we do like to partake in a good Super Bowl Party. AND Ezra had a random half-day at school yesterday so we got to beat the crowds (barely) when we made a run to Times Square for Super Bowl Boulevard. Check out this crazy huge Toboggan Run engineered by GMC! And of course there were lots of silly promotional photo opps and football fans abound to enjoy.

The temps here may get up to a balmy 20 degrees so – who knows? Maybe we will get outdoors again .. enjoy your Super Bowl weekend.

This long Columbus Day weekend we had a fun time showing cousins Tali and Jake around town… starting with Times Square and the giant Toys R Us with ferris wheel inside. And of course the subway rides are always entertaining.
How was your weekend?

Whew .. a week of work is done and I have a few days to decompress before going back to work again. My blog has been a little neglected due to a hectic schedule, but my friend sent this beautiful instagram of the Orly Gender show being knitted together this week. I cannot wait to check it out this weekend. And while I was working I was back in this neighborhood again where I found tulips growing by the carousel. It was a bit stressful being so near to Times Square while the news broke that the Boston bombers had it as a second target. But at lunchtime I liked to imagine I could be in Paris when I’m in Bryant Park – especially when it’s misty and rainy, and flowers are in bloom.

Bring on the flowers and warmer weather!
