Remember when Zoe and I had our little date this past summer? Well we finally did a follow-through and sat down and had tea! Poor Zoe – with all that went on with Papa Paul this year, her 4th birthday was a little bit ignored. So while her dad and brother saw the new Lego movie (a huge hit with Ezra by the way, and he’s a tough critic!) – Zoe and I went back to Alice’s Tea Cup as a belated birthday treat. She got the full treatment this time: a set of fairy wings, fairy dust sprinkled on to her hair – the whole nine yards. Of course in the end she opted for the hot chocolate with fancy sprinkles on her whip cream and I WAS saddled with drinking the tea, but it was great tea!

Here she is poised to pick out the pinkest cupcake available – look at that excited and happy little face. Happy yummy belated birthday my little muffin:

While we still haven’t had a sit-down tea party here (yet), we did get to stop in on Alice’s Tea Cup on the upper west side. It was too hot outside to enjoy hot tea but Zoe loved the sweet flower shaped sugar cookies (and all the princess dresses)! Later she stole my phone in Central Park to take pictures of her feet, and then met a friend in the fountain at the Time Warner building.

Really, does the name get any better than this? So far this is hands down the best children’s museum I’ve ever been to. Maybe I’m mostly impressed that this gorgeous old building was salvaged and converted to a children’s museum, instead of simply mowed down and built anew. Or maybe I love how many of the old toys and artifacts are woven into the new exhibits instead of being set aside to another section of the museum. Honestly it seems all kids’ museums have the same exhibits: the car garage and gas station, the water play area — but Please Touch does it bigger and better. And downstairs included a doll hospital, play McDonald’s Restaurant, and an amazing 2 story tree surrounded by an Alice in Wonderland play zone. We loved driving through Philadelphia in the first place, now this museum gives us even more reason to visit!

And for the extended times we spent indoors this weekend – thawing toes – we had a few dolly tea parties and did this very cool trick with milk, dish soap and food coloring!

Really could it get any colder? We are starting to go a little stir crazy indoors but honestly, it hurts to expose even a nose in this weather.

Some things to warm you:

— The perfect snowman. And some more here.

— If near a fireplace, start up the s’mores.

— Now that Zoe has had a tea party, I’m kinda craving one for big girls.

— And speaking of tea, check out these adorable tea cups.

— Stuck inside? My kids love to make a fort.

— This weekend is Tu Bishvat and we’ll be reading this book. I love the illustrations by Marc Simont.

— Speaking of trees, spare one and upcycle an old wood crib. What a great idea!

— How to do ‘little trees’ (as my kids call them) right… and quick!

— New thing I learned: Frost Flowers?

— Can you be up for this challenge of photographing your kids at least once a week? This underwater shot is the best.

— The prettiest dresses. I want them all!

— Getting excited about Valentine’s Day? I love this Valentine idea for kids.

Mostly in honor of her 3rd birthday, but also to celebrate some recent potty training and sleeping in her own bed: Her Majesty had a bit of brunch and tea over the weekend. Our teapot started out white, and was then decorated with stickers and washable markers. Some wands were made, and a Pinkalicious pink picnic blanket was spread for a tea party with sweet chamomile tea and tiny-hand-sized croissants. I think she now wants to make this a weekly habit. And who could blame her?

(by the way the BEST page of tea party ideas is here!)
