Via our Instagram feed…if you haven’t already seen it:

We had a shockingly warm day in late Feb that had us hopeful – grilling outdoors mid-winter is pretty great:

-But then there was more of this lovely view from our front window, happening more frequently now:

Relying on the goings on in our hood to entertain the kids, like this super fun ‘Drag Queen Story Hour‘ that packed the house at the local library:

And of course my husband has another great show up, and I help him out when we don’t have a ladder (this pix caught by bystander Ezra) :

Hope you are having a fun late winter as well!

Well yes, we are already back at it.  This summer really did just fly by and now we are back to the grind again.  Ezra is entering middle school/6th grade and Zoe is loving 2nd grade.  I can’t believe how quickly these kiddos are growing … can you?

Little Zoe is proving to be quite the gymnast.  We finally got her to a gymnastic class after getting worried that she’d knock over furniture at home – and she was given an award at the end of all the sessions for being such a great listener.  I think she looks pretty dang proud in these photos, doesn’t she?  And we are mighty proud of her too:

This is how Jackson Heights does a ‘Family Day’ – with Mr Met of course, and NDI.

Then Zoe (in the brown dress in front) and Ezra (in blue top and plaid shorts behind the gal in denim) joined in on the fun.. Zoe and Ezra have some pretty great ‘spaghetti arms’ and a fabulous finish! Broadway, here we come! (to see larger, click on the link to vimeo here.)

Meeting new neighbors in our alley has been great, but even more enriching when you discover there are some artist dads on the block! Local dad and artist Nitin Mukul had his show at the Consulate General of India, NYC – allowing us not only to view his work, but to hang at the Consulate at the same time. And we thought his paintings looked great in his home… look at them in this space!

We had a lot of friends over, and yet a basically mellow weekend. How about you?
(Below – Zoe and BFFs Hazel and Mia on a train to Manhattan for her tea non-party, Ezra arranged all her dolls for a slumber party on the floor that night, she can’t get enough of her birthday gifts, and Ezra making eggs for all of us in the a.m.)

An advantage to living in a city as diverse as Jackson Heights, Queens is that we get to learn about all different kinds of holidays. Our friends had a holiday round up on the 6th of December and we all got to talking about Sinterklaas. We do have some friends who really leave their shoes out with carrots in them for the night, in hopes of getting treats in their shoes in the morning. We got to talking about how HUGE gifts cannot fit into tiny kid’s shoes and how the American Christmas seems so over-the-top by comparison. Imagine trying to fit a Wii or PS gaming station system into tiny shoes?
I love this kind of December holiday mash up where – to add to the mix – a Brazilian family brought little cups of chocolate and sweetened condensed milk (called brigadeiro) for dessert as their contribution to holiday cheer! (see these and other pix on instagram)

Well I didn’t even get to blog about our long Labor Day weekend or some of our final lazy days of summer, and wham! Here it is, the first day of school. Ezra is transitioning into a new (humongous) school and handled it like a trooper this a.m. Zoe is returning to her school for a full day and UPK classes – and she is definitely ready for it. My husband and I just noted that this is the first time in 8 years that we have a full 6 hours of alone time during the weekdays. Have we taken the attachment parenting thing too far? I already miss them – but look at how much they’ve grown (compare to last year by clicking here) !

Our house
Is a very very very fine house
With two cats birds in the yard
Life use to be so hard
Now everything is easy, cause of you

It’s gonna take a lot of elbow grease, and I haven’t lived in a house for near 30 years… but it’s destined to be a great adventure. And it has great light, no? The birds (who won’t leave the garage) seem to think so too.
