How did I forget to post these pretty pictures? Nothing is more Americana than the Memorial Day ceremonies in West Cornwall CT – with their quaint parade of old fashioned cars, firetrucks and carnival afterwards. We did the Cakewalk again around the Maypole and Brad even won a cake covered in gummy worms!

We were up at the crack of dawn to see the White House – a tour that kept Ezra entertained (but Zoe was a bit bored by the rugs and china – in her eyes, this was all there was to see.) We got to catch the Cherry Blossom Parade, ran to the Freer and Hirshhorn Galleries, and even managed to jump on a carousel and enjoy the outdoor sculpture garden by the fountain. The weather was amazing so we just couldn’t fathom going indoors…

Halloween was full of school activity, as well as a parade at the end of the day. For starters Ezra’s class made hats that indicated their favorite book characters (this year it was Laura Ingalls Wilder for E) and then paraded around the block in costumes AND hats!

Ezra and his class had a march around the block one day during school in honor of Earth Day. They spent a few days making hats out of recycled things – then proudly marched around the neighborhood wearing them and holding their eco-conscious ideas on signs. I was so proud when I saw his sign insisting on ‘more electric cars’ to keep the trees happy (and – according to his sign – it will also prevent stick figure people from falling over and bleeding in the streets!)
As the sign says: “Gas cars is killing us!”

We live on a busy street that is often the site of parades … and ever since Ezra was young, he’s been a bit obsessed with parade floats. He’s wanted to ride one, or sit on one (or even better, in a ‘decorated parade car’) for years now. While in Rochester his cousins gave him a chance to do this by asking him to join them in a small town homecoming parade – complete with coiffed cheerleaders. His cousin Tali had room on her school’s float – and not only did they get to dress up like cowboys but they got to toss candy out to parade viewers. He took this job VERY seriously but did manage to stuff his pockets with a secret stash of candy before leaving the float.
With all this recent ‘western’ themed activity you wouldn’t guess we were from the city now, would you?
