We won a day of New York City tourist entertainment, so my husband and I decided to use it for ourselves and leave the kids home!  It’s been decades since we last went to the top of the Empire State or took a bus tour around Manhattan.  The Ride was ridiculously touristy but once the guides got wind of the fact that we are FROM NYC – they were relentless and tortured us through the entire ride .. which made it even more fun. We caught some of the Macy’s Flower Show prep and got to go to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum which I enjoyed more than my husband.  A kiss on the Top of the Rock topped off the day before we did our short commute home and fell into bed.

This winter has left us a little stir crazy.  For a while there it seemed like our kids were starting to refuse to go out and about with us. Loving the new house and alley so much, they wanted to stick around at home more.  But then suddenly this weekend it was actually Ezra who had a strong desire to go back to my favorite museum – the MoMA!  HE actually begged us to go.  And so we did .. and enjoyed a pop art show of 60s art and culture, and Ezra even pointed out Starry Night as one he remembered as his favorite.  I guess his art classes at school are paying off..?

And he even had a trip to Carnegie Hall (thank you to the Seows) to see a chamber orchestra, and enjoyed it.  Some city culture sinking in perhaps?

It did snow, and we had a snow day off from school (kids were thrilled).  I unknowingly took our new dog Louie out in the snow without a sweater… yes, I’m use to shedding dogs with fur .. so had NO idea how cold this poor boy would be.  Now I know.  He survived me like a trooper.

Other than socializing Louie as best we can, and getting him use to living with us – we keep our fingers on the pulse of various local protests, sometimes stopping to photograph them.  The city is alive and pulsing as always, but often it’s too cold to stay out there for long!

And the irony: this weekend will be unseasonably warm so we will plan on doing some grilling!  Enjoy your weekend.

His cursive writing skills are coming along nicely! They no longer teach this at school, sadly. Ezra learned it himself.

This is NOT a paid ad — but just a full admission that my girl (and her cousin Stella) are pretty nuts about American Girl Dolls.  When cousins Stella and Alison came to town there was no denying that a trip to the AGD Cafe was in order, and we all had a lovely time (including the dolls!)  Alison and I have to admit that the food was pretty yummy and having the dolls seated at the table – well that just made Zoe’s day. Extra special thanks to Stella and Alison for the cafe date and to cousin Eve for the American Girl Doll that Zoe loves to tote around!

We love Ezra’s public school for all its enrichment programs – especially via the music department.  Since Ezra has been drumming for the rock band and concert band at school (see his video/moves here at the bottom of the page) he’s been able to go to City Winery and see a band prep for a show.  They got to meet the band ‘The Mountain Goats‘ and watch them warm up, and even got to ask the musicians a number of questions directly .

Javits Center here in NYC hosted the Green Festival Expo last weekend. While Zoe and I went to a birthday party, Ezra got to try Kombucha, various flavors of gluten and dairy free ice cream and test out some pretty slick kitchen knives. I’m not really sure where the bubble full of money comes in on all this but Ezra definitely had a great time scrambling to collect as many dollars as he could over a wind machine!

Zoe and I got tickets to a kid-oriented day at the American Ballet Theater.  What a treat! It was only an hour long, covered 4 choreographers and allowed kids to stand and try to practice a few moves on their own while in the audience.  This all meant a lot less wiggling around and boredom by act 3.

Best of all, the main hall was tricked out with some pretty great polkadot sculpture and a carousel of twirling figures.

If you can’t give your kids an authentic music experience in NYC, then why live here in the great city of jazz? We’ve been dying to do this ever since we learned about it while at the Morris-Jumel Mansion.   We finally made it back uptown to the ‘triple nickel building’ (as Marjorie called it) – or 555 Edgecombe Ave located near 160th St in Harlem.   Marjorie opens up her own apartment for a jazz show from 4-6 pm – donations requested, and love of music required.  The kids were so well behaved and Marjorie’s piano playing so soothing on a cold Sunday afternoon.  Here is a great shot from Zoe via my iPhone, and then other great pix from placematters.net

Ok really Ezra was ticketed to be somewhere else, but he somehow got on to a little caper/adventure and found himself wandering around where most kids are NOT allowed – The Javitz Center Toy Fair.  Don’t ask me how it happened but this boy got to explore some new exciting toys and even tried many of them out! Good thing he’s a sweet kid – no one threw him out! (photos by gregkessler.com)
