Every year my side of the family rounds up to do some gift opening and general holiday cheer.  This year we were even gifted with a little dusting of snow from Mother Nature… not enough to keep loved ones from traveling, but enough to make the setting seem perfect.  And tonight, we start our own Chanukah candle lighting …

I’m always at a bit of a loss with what to do on Christmas Day. This year I did something I was always curious about: we explored Manhattan while everyone else was in unwrapping gifts. As I had hoped, the tourist crowds were minimal and we could see the windows and lights on Fifth Avenue without having to struggle to see over other heads!
We then checked out the huge tree at The New York Palace Hotel before heading downtown for lunch. Best of all we got to do another holiday mitzvah – while strolling downtown we ran into a family who were feeding the homeless community in Tompkins Square Park, and Ezra wanted to jump in and help! He and my husband handed out food before we headed home for the night. I think we now have a new tradition for December 25.

and we are winding down December with the last of gingerbread-house making at school, visits to see family in Boston (note the New England tree with lobster, fisherman, and lighthouse ornaments) and a trip to Brooklyn where Industry City had a great ‘Mexican Christmas’ party and display of blinky snowmen. I for one am looking forward to a quieter winter break before New Year’s Eve…

The weather was unseasonably warm during the beginning of this week … all the way up to near 70 degrees! As I drove back from Boston I saw people in Central Park wearing only tee shirts and shorts – in late December. We decided it would be a perfect balmy night to see the crazy over-the-top holiday lights in the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. The light show didn’t disappoint and for the first time we could get out of the car and walk around, without freezing.

Hope you are enjoying your week everyone!

It’s so nice that Chanukah started on a Saturday this year… isn’t it? We had a nice relaxing start to the day – the kids dragged around treat bags that they made with grandma last year and filled them with their chosen gift to open for the day. I know you’ve seen Chanukah spelled at least 3 different ways on this blog – It was only a few years ago when I learned that there are multiple spellings.
This year Zoe is so excited by lights and gifts that it’s made Ezra a bit more enthusiastic about the holiday, so we are very much in the spirit this year.

Bubby already sent us some crafts for Chanukah, giving us something to do in Rochester in the snow. I can’t believe it’s only a couple weeks away!
