We had shakshuka in the sukkah at cousin Stephanie’s house. What a treat! I do love this holiday and eating outdoors for what feels like the last days before the real bitter cold comes around. We feasted outdoors for lunch as well before hiking around Rock Creek National Park a bit. I guess I didn’t realize how many friends and neighbors can build sukkahs in their yards when you live in the suburbs. In the city I’d grown accustomed to just visiting common sukkahs in synagogues or if an apartment building was fortunate enough to have large garden space. And of course what’s best of all is getting to see cousins again for the weekend.

We are trying to take in all the foliage viewing that we can, before it’s gone. What are YOU up to this weekend?

This has been a great fall for making leaf piles. We went out to New Jersey last weekend to see cousins Steven and Arianna – and it’s amazing how much pleasure my city kids can get out of a yard full of colorful leaves. What a nice departure to NOT have to worry about all the things that can be in leaf piles in the city! Have a great weekend and enjoy the last of fall’s colors – while they are here:

We got another urge to explore Brooklyn and found ourselves wandering around the Lefferts House at Prospect Park. Apparently the house isn’t open on weekends this time of year but the kids still get inspired running around its yard. Ezra is very into the Laura Ingalls Wilder series of books these days – so seeing a horse-drawn wagon and water pump just makes him the happiest kid ever. We will have to blog about this place once we get on the inside of the house!
And Zoe loves being near the carousel at dusk when the lights on it twinkle. It’s worth mentioning that her outfit was inspired by her need to look like a ‘ladybug and a bee’ all in the same day.

I think we are. But we were happy to tag along with our friends this past Sunday – to see the New York Botanical Garden’s Haunted Garden. Lots of crazy ideas here for how to carve (or stack) your pumpkins into nifty sculptures. We have 2 last pumpkins to carve/paint or stick with these cool decorators that Bubby found… and then it’s over. Pumpkins – prepare to become soup!

While they still do not yet have names, it was fun to welcome 2 new little kittens to the Cornwall house. Brad picked them out and loves them to bits… two sweet little sisters who entertained the kids for a good part of the weekend. I’m just glad the kids know to be gentle with them because the cats were easily wiped out – perhaps by all the new stimulation? We are still pitching names… know of any good ones?

Busy week. Lots of photos to post – and not a lot of time to write! So I’ll leave us with these photos of leaves turning, apples and pears falling, kids picking, and new kittens frolicking in the yard at Cornwall. Lots of chopping and stacking wood for the coming cold months (and for more s’mores!)
