I do love this crazy, orange month with it’s hot and cold flashes and … hopefully… some changing leaf foliage soon.  We’ve been building a sukkah at our synagogue and enjoying the last of the Jewish New Year holidays and atoning.  Our synagogue is in Flushing Queens, surrounded by Chinatown which – as it turns out – Chinese Harvest Festival is going on at the same time as Sukkot.  And if you haven’t seen all the crazy Halloween costumes on social media lately, you must stop in at Target to try them on.  Zoe can’t get enough of dress up:

Enjoy this season of renewal and beginnings.  As my rabbi so aptly put in an email to me this a.m:

“Dig down and give – to your partner/spouse/child/parents/extended family/ lover/ friends/community,
The Big World Out There that Needs Your Help SO MUCH!!”

Last weekend we decorated the sukkah – how can you not love a holiday that celebrates a harvest? And with that in mind, we are scrambling to collect the things that we’ve been growing before all the rain here blows it down.

Have a great weekend!

Zoe started the New Year with a peek at her new school .. she was excited until mom and Ezra had to leave her alone. Then she clung to one of the assistant teachers until dad picked her up. I think it may be a good start… an exciting time, for sure.

Her self-imposed ‘uniform’ looks like the one her brother wears to school – and yup, the shoes are on backwards but I pick my battles!

Ezra and Zoe joined their cousins at Sunday school this past weekend and had an opportunity to decorate and eat in the sukkah at Temple Sinai at the end of Sukkot. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite Jewish holidays. Maybe it’s the New England girl in me – I love celebrating the change of seasons. This holiday really highlights the harvest, eating outdoors with friends, and who doesn’t love decorating an outdoor hut? I thought for sure Ezra would love it seeing as he loves making shelters these days.
Zoe and her cousin got to make some paper chains for the sukkah and Ezra and cousin Jake learned the Hebrew word for hand (Yad) among a host of other things like Blessing for the Arba Minim, which I’ve never learned! (thank you Temple Sinai for letting us visit)

mmmm doughnut holes for noshing!
