We missed the boat (or ferry? pun intended) on getting out to Governor’s Island this past summer. However as it turns out it’s really nice to get there in the fall.  The cooler temps means that the kids have more tolerance of being outdoors on the slides and walking around in the sparsely shaded areas … and the small/new trees were starting to turn!  Best of all .. kids could walk around the abandoned houses (now turned into temp gallery spaces) and trick or treat for candy, which was a pleasant surprise. And the sprawling displays of pumpkins can’t be beat.

I love this tradition we have of having our own party in the alley for Halloween.  Residents came up with their own ‘station’ to have in back of their home or in their garage.  We made a photo booth of sorts (selfie station) and there was a cookie decorating zone, a ‘chocolate (fountain) bar’, potions-making station, apple bobbing area .. and of course we had to finish the fun all up with a ‘make a mommy into a mummy’ out of toilet paper contest.

We had a great little segue into fall … with leaves slowly turning color, and another somewhat balmy Halloween night.  Even though it was a school night – kids were out in droves collecting candy on our street.  Bye for now October… it’s been a LOT of fun.

Remember our friends, the fun Marten family who treated us to some ‘glamping’? Well they put on a super fun Halloween party at their home – with a magician, aerialist, and amazing food! And of course their family and friends are always fun as well.  After that, we felt the urge to decorate our own front door and as always – E and Z’s dad got some great annual Halloween costume portraits .. have a great weekend everyone!

We had some tombstones and skeletons that we bought at the store (as well as last year’s fuzzy spider) and sadly they all got swiped from our front lawn a week ago! Enter: the challenge to make some decorations that would live INSIDE our house and away from the elements (and sticky fingers). Zoe and Ezra made bats out of paper and a ghost to hang from the tree, and I made some big eyes to look down at potential thieves. It was fun getting some time to do things from scratch – like trying our hands at carving pumpkins. E and Z’s dad is the pro at instructing us on this .. Look how proud these little artist are! And roasting the seeds at the end is the best reward.

Last year at this time we crammed all our boxes and furniture into our newly spruced up home – and the kids explored the new alley and celebrated Halloween. This year we are settled and this whole ‘decorating outdoors’ thing is SO new to us! We love it. Heck, handing out candy is pretty new to us as well – so hopefully we’ll have enough to go all night (and all day? How does one handle a Saturday Halloween?!)
Have a great weekend.

It’s the season for pumpkins again, yes? We learned this time around to NOT put our pumpkins out too early though … last year the squirrels ran off with one, and ate as much of it as they could. But eating everything flavored with pumpkin is my favorite past time… so I kind of understand.

Our friends in Astoria did up their house, with a movie projected on a nearby building and everything! I guess we have to step up our game next year, now that we have a home to decorate:

Well it was a can of crazy here late last week, but somehow miraculously (with the help of grandparents) we managed to get kids in costumes and out to parties. Four parties in our ‘alley’ alone! By the way, the ‘alley’ is our back drive, filled with children and great neighbors, and described by others in the hood as the equivalent of moving ‘into Sesame Street’. You will hear a lot about it on the blog I’m sure. What a great, warm receptive group of neighbors we have. Ezra was a Dinobot and Zoe was one of the thousands of Elsas on the street… but I still think she was the prettiest. Who needs candy when all this other fun is going on?

I feel like last October we ran amok with wayyyyy too many pumpkin outings. This fall we are wrangling with a beast of a house renovation and tons of packing so this may be one of the very few pumpkin posts for this year. Let’s see how it all goes with getting out of Home Depot and into the fall foliage this month. Meanwhile here are some shots of our trip back to Hank’s, where we at least got a taste of the season (and some pumpkin and apple-cider donuts – yum!)
