Cousins Alison and Stella took us to the Mitzvah Garden near there synagogue, where we learned a thing or two about collecting water in rain barrels and planting vegetables for summer!  I plan on using some info I gleaned about keeping purple martins around with bird feeders .. so that they will linger to eat all our bugs!

It helps to have a pro (E and Z’s dad) take the photos… especially when the gardens are not yet blooming and not quite photogenic!

More shots of the mad dash to find eggs and candy in our yards!

Mmmm beans and tomatoes and all sorts of good stuff from their yard. It’s bittersweet when fall comes and we have to start to say goodbye to summer, but hello to all this yummy stuff from their garden!

I think we are. But we were happy to tag along with our friends this past Sunday – to see the New York Botanical Garden’s Haunted Garden. Lots of crazy ideas here for how to carve (or stack) your pumpkins into nifty sculptures. We have 2 last pumpkins to carve/paint or stick with these cool decorators that Bubby found… and then it’s over. Pumpkins – prepare to become soup!

This is one of my favorite holidays… because it happens in the crisp cool fall (usually) and requires making an outdoor structure. Then we get to invite people to come and decorate it, and then eat inside it. What more could kids want? As Ezra said, it’s like camping only better because you get to decorate the structure! A sweet little egalitarian synagogue tucked away on 11th street in Manhattan hosted a kid’s event for Sukkot this past weekend. I’m glad we stumbled into this event, because we will be busy and won’t get to set up a sukkah in our own garden. We never have made our own sukkah, but with our garden newly spruced up it’s more tempting than ever to eat outside.

We’ve had a fun and fortunate summer .. fortunate in that many of our friends have invited us to peaceful retreats to the country. And it couldn’t come at a better time since there’s constant noise and smells (and today crazy heat!) coming from the busy street below our city apartment! Etta and Audrey had us out to their grandparents’ house where the kids could run through grass, play on swings and fish at the VERY local pond. Ezra and Zoe couldn’t get enough of their plants and the garden, where Ezra invented ‘chocolate mint sandwiches’ (basically the leaves from the chocolate-mint plant folded into a triangle and eaten right there by the garden.) Audrey loves to wear her bunny ears and hop around – heck I love the ears too. And of course there was a session of s’more making at night – how could we go without one?

In these last days of warm weather and long mornings (before school starts) I am trying to utilize our newly renovated garden as a fun post-breakfast hang out while we can. Once again there is a lot of hard work involving painting while shirtless – which we will do while the weather permits. I love dragging Playdoh and the Snoopy Snow Cone Machine down here – where clean up is so easy!
