After a pretty near perfect day at the beach (Jacob Riis beach to be exact) – where Ezra coaxed me into the HUGE warm waves to be smashed around with him on the shore (a new game that he loves) – we went to this totally yummy spot for some fish tacos. There was a bit of a long line but it was definitely worth the wait for fresh ingredients, and a fresh coconut as our beverage. Rumor has it the owner surfs in South East Asia on the off season, and then opens this little taco hut for the summer only. Check out their fun promo movie here; http://rockawaytaco.com/.

I use to love to photograph this parade back before I was married or had kids. I had nearly forgotten about it – and then somehow Zoe got wind of it and (being recently obsessed with mermaids) just had to partake in the mermaid fun. It was hot and super crowded, but since the kids are so tiny – they could get to the front of the crowd and see the costumes. Ezra – being the good natured brother that he is – even got dressed up as King Neptune for Zoe’s enjoyment. In the end I think Mayor DeBlasio even approached Ezra and gave him a gold coin while dressed like a pirate. The crowds were so thick that people started climbing the scaffolding on the sidewalks – but in the end it was worth it. (By the way – Zoe painted her shells herself!)

The weather was unseasonably warm during the beginning of this week … all the way up to near 70 degrees! As I drove back from Boston I saw people in Central Park wearing only tee shirts and shorts – in late December. We decided it would be a perfect balmy night to see the crazy over-the-top holiday lights in the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. The light show didn’t disappoint and for the first time we could get out of the car and walk around, without freezing.

Hope you are enjoying your week everyone!

We got another urge to explore Brooklyn and found ourselves wandering around the Lefferts House at Prospect Park. Apparently the house isn’t open on weekends this time of year but the kids still get inspired running around its yard. Ezra is very into the Laura Ingalls Wilder series of books these days – so seeing a horse-drawn wagon and water pump just makes him the happiest kid ever. We will have to blog about this place once we get on the inside of the house!
And Zoe loves being near the carousel at dusk when the lights on it twinkle. It’s worth mentioning that her outfit was inspired by her need to look like a ‘ladybug and a bee’ all in the same day.

Some time ago, friends sent us a weblink to this place. We really wished Buzz-a-Rama was open during the summer so that Ezra could have a birthday party here. It was a fun sleepy hangout on a cold Sunday afternoon however – and Zoe and her girlfriends even enjoyed an hour of racing. Now I think E has some grand ideas of building a track in our living room!

We had some free family fun in Brooklyn this past Saturday. This Haunted Walk was entertaining but I’m glad we did it by daylight hours. The kids are suddenly crawling into our bed in the wee hours of the night – so I think all this halloween haunting business is getting to them! But the foliage turning in Prospect Park made the trip worth while.

Remember we ran into Smorgasburg here and here? The Smorgasburg trend is spreading … and we are glad it is! We gorged on chicken and waffles (Uncle Anthony’s idea) – some fish and chips for the kids, steak sandwiches and shrimp spring rolls. Washed it all down with mango lemonade – yum! – and then on to more scooting. We are hoping that by showing them all this good food, they’ll crave some more and will come back again and visit.

We had to show the cousins the best playground in NYC – so off to Brooklyn to find slide mountain, the swing zone and the cute little cabins in the sand at Brooklyn Bridge Park/Pier 6. And of course while there we had to take them to Jane’s Carousel – that great big beautiful merry-go-round in the glass box by the water that we’ve blogged about so many times before!

Remember this from last summer? This year the kids are tall enough to try more rides.
Here are some Coney Island pictures to enjoy – before the summer is over (how DID it go by so fast?!):
