My husband and I like to celebrate a little earlier (or later) than Valentine’s Day, in order avoid all the chaos of the actual holiday (battling for reservations and dealing with over-decorated restaurants with mediocre ‘prix fix’ menus is not for us). This year we discovered Butcher Bar in Astoria – where even my mostly vege-pescatarian husband was tempted by great smoked meat. The Beef Candy sandwich was amazing – I’m already craving another.
Enjoy your weekend and happy Valentine’s Day!

Who knew this great new flea market/street fair was happening on weekends in our old Queens neighborhood (near Kaufman Astoria Studios) ? GREAT food and even a bicycle powered slush making machine – the kids were psyched. Zoe loves pink lady sushi – with mango and shrimp. YUM! So much to see, buy and eat…

I know I know – we’ve been here so often. We couldn’t resist a new art show and some warmer weather. It’s good to be outside again… and frolicking with good friends. (And kids are allowed to climb on the art!)

Remember we did this post about our creative friends in Astoria Queens and their adorable Lyla Tov monsters? (We’ve got a button of little monsters in our widgets that you can click on.) Well.. we got a chance to see them again – at a party thanking everyone for their recent kickstarter success! Momma Erin is so creative.. she transformed the basement level of a synagogue into a carnival and Lyla Tov monster fiesta. Congrats to the Black family on their continued monster-making success!

Every year this park (located near the last Queens apartment that we lived in) hosts a Kite Flight – where kids are invited to make a kite, and then fly it. This year the kite instruction was a bit complex and in ernest mostly parents were making kites for kids… but it was great to get to Socrates Sculpture Garden filled with kites and see the lush gardens blooming along the edge of the park.

This past Sunday we had a craving for grilled calamari and tzatziki – but found that our favorite Greek restaurants were closed! I guess Astoria practically shut down for Greek Easter but I’m glad we found one restaurant open – because Zoe loved the pink hard boiled eggs and Greek Easter cookies.

It’s always fun to find new great eats in our own Borough. Hinomaru Ramen is a favorite of friends of ours – who live in Astoria and constantly crave the Niku Man buns (pulled pork on sweet buns). We had vegetarian options and the kids loved the Japanese sodas with a glass marble in the bottle to keep the soda from pouring too fast. Now that it’s getting colder (again) I could go for some warm ramen! Enjoy your weekend.
